Optimmune Eye Ointment 3.5g tube

Optimmune is an eye ointment containing Cyclosporin and is used to treat recurrent conjunctivitis resulting from autoimmune disease of the eye in dogs. These include Dry Eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS) and Pannus (chronic superficial keratits).

What is conjunctivitis in dogs?

Conjunctivitis (dry eye syndrome) is an uncomfortable but common condition in dogs which causes severe drying and inflammation of the cornea. Tears are important for keeping dogs eyes healthy providing lubrication and nourishment. When tear levels are low, thick often itchy, yellow/green discharge can develop around the eyes and this reappears after being wiped away.

How to use Optimmune Eye Ointment

Remove any excessive discharge from the eye prior to application.

Use only the equivalent of a short grain of rice (3mm). This is the licensed dose and will provide the optimum clinical effects with maximum economy.

The best method of application is to wipe a small amount onto the underside of the upper eyelid. The ointment base is an excellent lubricant and it will spread over the eye when your dog blinks.

The tube should be kept at room temperature. You should throw any unused product away four weeks after opening. This is a recommendation for all eye products in order to maintain sterility.

7 – 12 hourly dosing is ideal. It is worth while keeping treatments evenly spaced as Optimmune often works better twice daily than just once.

Precautions: Avoid contact with the skin, wear gloves and wash hands after use.

Is dry eye painful in dogs?

Dry eye can be painful, so the animal may paw at the eye more than normal or shy away from the area being touched. Dogs with this condition typically have red eyes from irritation as well as some thick mucoid discharge. They will squint frequently and may blink excessively or keep their eyes closed.

What can you do for a dog with dry eye?

There are two commonly used ophthalmic medications to stimulate tear production, Optimmune® and Visiocare. Both are easily placed in the eyes once or twice daily. These drugs are very safe and most pets improve dramatically with their consistent use.

What is a substitute for Optimmune for dogs?

We researched alternatives for Optimmune and found Visiocare. It had great feedbacks from people who used Optimmune before.
